The DOORSTEP Wilbrahams’ and Six Mile Bottom Vegetable Flower and Produce Show, Saturday, 18th July 2020

It seems due to the current situation of Coronavirus that the Show as we know it, will sadly not be taking place in the Memorial Hall this year.

However, it would be a shame for the day to go un-noticed so the idea is to have a DOORSTEP SHOW instead!

During ‘lockdown’ many of you may have been busier in your gardens than usual and had more time for baking and craft making.  This would give you the ideal opportunity to ‘show off’ your wares and we suggest that you make up a table display in your front garden/path/drive (i.e. visible from the road but not blocking the pavement) from 10am – 1pm. For anyone who doesn’t have a suitable area, perhaps could display at a neighbour’s.  There is no Schedule to follow so you have a free rein to display anything at all you feel proud of, grouped into the categories below.  There will be no entry fee to pay or prize money given but we will be awarding the Cups for Best Exhibits in each section and one for the overall most dynamic table display!

The categories are:

  • Home grown fruit/vegetables (The Stephenson Cup)
  • Flowers/foliage/plants from your garden (The Brian Fisher Salver)
  • Flower arrangement with one or more roses. (The Rose Bowl)
  • Home produce e.g. eggs, preserves, bread, baking (Social Club Cup)
  • Arts and Crafts – made within the last year (2012 Jubilee Rose Bowl)
  • Children’s Arts and Crafts (Thistle Tankard)
  • Children’s Scarecrow competition (Junior Cup)
  • The best overall table display (Doris Franklin Cup)

Each table will be photographed and judging done remotely with the results being available by the following evening on the village website (No tastings or touching of items will occur).

A flyer will be delivered to you door mid – late June with all the details and instructions for the day. On the back, there will be a section for you to fill in your name and address, which will need to be visible on your table for when the photo is taken (so that we know whose display belongs to who!).  The idea is that you let us know by Saturday 11th July if you are intending to take part so that we can make a map.

The Photography Section, which had already been arranged (see classes below as per Schedule, printed in the Spring Edition of the Warbler) will go ahead as usual and photos submitted on-line please to chris.fell@me.com by midnight  Friday, 17th July. The winner will be awarded The Les Potter Cup

Classes:

1) ’’Tree(s)” (an image showing one or more trees to their best advantage)
2) A Wilbraham or Six Mile Bottom Landmark (think about a thing or place which you might use when giving directions e.g. “Turn left at the…..”)
3) ”Lines curves and patterns”  (e.g. tiles, a modern building, manhole covers use your imagination!)
4) ”Blue” (anything mostly blue)
5) Wild visitors to the garden (e.g. insects, foxes, birds – what can you find?)

The “SPUD IN THE BUCKET” Competition and the “PELARGONIUM PLUG PLANT” Competition (David Waters’ Memorial Cup):

Please deliver your entries (with your name and contact number securely attached) by 12 midday on 18th July to the driveway of 13, High Street, Great Wilbraham where there will be marked areas to put them. (If you are unable to bring your entries yourself, please let me know by 17th July and I will collect them.)

Your plants and bags of weighed potatoes will be ready for collection by 4pm.

We are looking forward to this being an enjoyable and fun day.…and hopefully sunny, allowing people to walk around the villages admiring the ‘fruits of your labours’ whilst maintaining the current Government guidelines on social distancing.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any queries and in the meantime keep safe and well!
