We are now a Nation in Mourning for our Monarch.

Great Wilbraham will come together as a community to mourn the death of our Queen and mark the proclamation of our new King. Our events and activities will follow national protocols and timings. 

Timetable of events

Thursday 8th September: Announcement of the death


Friday 9th September (Noon): St Nicholas’ Great Wilbraham, will announce the death of Her Majesty with the tolling of a single bell.


Saturday 10th September: Proclamation Day  in London and on the following day throughout the country.


Sunday 11th September (9.30):  A service will be held at St John’s Church, Little Wilbraham.

Sunday 11th September (4 pm): The Chairman of the Great Wilbraham Parish Council will proclaim the new Monarch at the Great Wilbraham Memorial Hall

Sunday 11th September (4 pm): The Chairman of the Little Wilbraham & Six Mile Bottom Parish Council will proclaim the new Monarch on the Church Green, Little Wilbraham – entrance to St John’s Church.


Wednesday 14th September (7.30 pm): A Service of Prayer and Reflection will be held at St Nicholas’ Church, Great Wilbraham.


Sunday 18th  September (9.30): A service will be held at St Nicholas’ Church, Great Wilbraham.


Monday 19th September State Funeral & Public Holiday. A single bell will toll in St Nicholas’ Great Wilbraham, for one hour prior to the state funeral.

Other arrangements

A Book of Condolence for Great Wilbraham Residents will be available at St Nicholas Church Great Wilbraham, which will be open each day between approximately 9 am and 7 pm. Our messages will form part of a national archive and will represent an important record from our community. Condolence messages can also be sent via the Royal Family website at https://www.royal.uk/

A Book of Condolence for Little Wilbraham & Six Mile Bottom Residents will be available at St John’s Church Little Wilbraham, which will be open each day between approximately 9 am and 7 pm.

Flowers can be laid at the Great Wilbraham Village Sign during the period of mourning. In line with the Queen’s expressed wishes, we are asked to keep these flowers simple: Please do not include any plastic or cellophane wrapping and cross the road carefully to reach the triangle!
